For last 30 years we were doing business as usual and we were stagnating for last two years with a growth rate of less than 5%. As a company we were cost focused and operated in cost world. The concept of ‘Throughput’ has given a new perspective and our whole approach towards business has changed. With TOC in place, we are now focused and we think holistically.
Some of the quick successes that we have tasted: a. We got enough conviction to show value to our institutional customers. We have been able to get price increase in range of 5 % to 20% b. Avenir is helping us in setting up distribution channel for our products – our new engine of growth. In first month of operation itself, distribution sales are second highest after Wal-Mart. c. We have started selling in distribution channel with a Throughput of 68%; which is 30% higher than our institutional sales. d. We have cleared Wal-Mart Food & Safety Audit with 93.3 marks (out of 100) , highest ever achieved in history of KAY.

We, Tata Refractories Limited, Belpahar, are working with you, Avenir Management Services Pvt. Limited, New Delhi, on a Theory of Constraints (TOC) engagement named Project SambhaV. The Project SambhaV initiative has come a long way for last 16months. It was an audacious journey and we have experienced a mix of success and challenges. However, we as a company see a remarkable change started happening in the DNA of TRL as an organization. We would like to bring to your notice some the key milestones achieved: 1. OTIF (on time and in full) has become a phenomenon in TRL. The whole organization has gravitated towards achievement of the same. From a level of 30% at the start of initiative, we have reached a level of 75% (YTW). Internal failures have been reduced less than 5%. 2. Releasing of Capacity in Dolomite business (25%) and High Alumina (15%). 3. Reduction in WIP levels by 20%. 4. Made to Stock scenario in FCP and Dolomite business has helped in meeting demand from market in a better way. 5. Concept of Margin has been introduced and filtration of sales inquiries has helped in containing the low contribution orders. 6. Focus of organization has shifted from Top line (sales revenue) to Throughput (contribution). 7. Buffer Management has been introduced in Raw Material department which will help the department in ensuring right raw material is available in right quantity.
